Scrambler Style, Featherweight Package
The Scrambler 400 XC takes the liquid-cooled 398 cc single from the Speed 400 and gives it real dirt-road credibility. That is the whole point of the XC. It adds wire-spoked wheels that still run tubeless tires, a high front mudguard, a sump guard and engine bars. It rolls on a 19-inch front wheel with 5.9 in (150 mm) of travel front and rear and 7.7 in (195 mm) of ground clearance. That meets my minimum for a scrambler that is more than a naked bike in costume. With 39 hp and 28 lb-ft it sits at the accessible end of the class, and it looks the part from every angle.
On the road it is light, forgiving and stable, and the chassis copes with broken pavement and gentle gravel better than the spec sheet suggests. Running costs stay low, which matters on a bike that will mostly see casual miles rather than big trips. It suits newer riders, and it suits anyone who wants a stylish second bike with genuine character. The caveats are real, though. The fork has no adjustment and only the rear shock takes preload. This generation has also shown some teething trouble: coolant loss with signs of mixing into the oil, random warning lights, and bolts that left the factory under-torqued. Insist on a thorough pre-delivery check.

Over the years I have soaked up a lot of what owners say about their bikes. Some of it comes from the paddock and from club nights, some from long chats with owners, and some from the emails and messages riders send me directly. On the Scrambler 400 XC that talk points one way. Owners praise how easy it is to live with and how well it is finished. The complaints are scattered, and each one comes from only a few riders.
The most repeated praise is about how the engine and the bike's size work together in everyday riding. Riders consistently describe clean pull from as low as 3,000 rpm, so they change gear less and make relaxed progress. Owners also keep coming back to the low weight and narrow build in town. Threading through traffic and creeping along at walking pace builds their confidence quickly. Many say the engine never feels intimidating but still has a livelier side when they want it.
The second theme is quality. Owners say the paint, the switchgear and the metal parts feel a cut above budget rivals, which fits what they expect from Triumph. Riders also bring up the suspension travel at both ends. They say it soaks up bumps well and keeps the ride composed on rough surfaces and light trails.
The gripes are single reports rather than a chorus, but they still deserve a fair hearing. One owner finds the dipped beam weak and feels less confident riding at night. Another describes an abrupt pickup when opening the throttle from closed, which makes it harder to stay smooth in slow corners. The front brake lever draws comment too. It needs a hard squeeze for best results, and the span may be too wide for smaller hands. At sustained highway speeds, individual owners say the engine starts to feel strained and the single's vibration becomes intrusive.
Suspected coolant mixing with engine oil
Some owners report coolant levels dropping and signs of mixing, potentially indicating a head gasket or sealing fault.
Starter button occasionally fails to crank
The starter does not engage when pressed; a key-on/off cycle or software update may resolve it.
Loose fasteners from factory
Bolts, especially around the chassis and bodywork, may not be fully torqued, requiring a thorough check after delivery.
Tyre valve leak
A handful of cases involve a slow leak from the valve stem; replacement of the valve fixes the issue.
Engine stalling when downshifting
One owner reports the bike stalls while downshifting, occasionally occurring multiple times per month.
